With the beautiful summer in full-swing, so too comes the time of year when crime rates climb. We all need to be extra diligent in keeping safe and watching for suspicious behavior in our neighborhood.

Avoid opportunistic thieves! Remember to:
-Lock your car doors both at home and in parking lots
-Don't walk away, even for a moment, with your garage door open
-Don't leave windows and doors to your home open when you leave
-Keep your front door locked

The past issue of The Mirror had some helpful hints about avoiding theft from your vehicle. Also, here on our site under Resources, you can find a link to the City's Neighborhood Crime Maps to find out what specific criminal activity is happening in your area.

If you see suspicious behavior in your neighborhood, call the Denver Police non-emergency dispatch number at 720-913-2000. If you see a crime in action or believe you are in danger - call 911!

Have a safe and happy summer!

Palmer Opportunities
Did you know that if a student falls behind by the third grade, they are unlikely to ever catch up? There are exciting opportunities at Palmer Elementary for you to help. Palmer teachers could use help in the classroom in the areas of reading and math. There may also be opportunities to tutor children while in small groups during school hours, or after school. Training will be provided, and no experience is necessary! Any amount of time you have to volunteer is appreciated! If you have other skills that might be of use, please let us know. This is truly a terrific way to make a difference in a child's life, and in your community!!

If you are interested or have questions, please contact Jessica Aman at jessica.aman@hotmail.com or 303-956-4170.

Thanks for your interest in improving our neighborhood school!

Colfax Resurfacing Project
DENVER - On Monday, May 4, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will resume a resurfacing project on Colfax Avenue (U.S. 40) between Colorado Boulevard (Colorado 2) and Quebec Street. The project rotomills and paves approximately two miles of Colfax Avenue in asphalt and replaces curb and gutter, curb ramps and sidewalk.

"The project originally started in June 2008, but was shutdown last summer due to an asphalt shortage," said CDOT Project Engineer Bryan Kalliokoski. "With asphalt now available, we can complete the rest of the project in just a couple of months."

To date, crews have completed most of the curb and gutter work as well as the curb ramps and sidewalk. In addition, approximately 50 percent of the rotomilling and paving is complete with the majority of the remaining work lying between Hudson Street and Quebec Street.

Throughout the project, motorists can expect single lane closures Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. with occasional weekend work. Minor delays are expected and alternate route are advised.

CDOT would like to remind motorists to "Slow for the Cone Zone" and obey all construction signs and flaggers.

Premier Paving Inc. is the contractor of this $1.8 million project, which should be complete by the end of June 2009.
