Denver Police Department Internet Predator Unit

By Elaine Zupancic

If you have ever watched the television show “To Catch a Predator,” you have a good idea what the Internet Predator Unit of the Denver Police Department does. Detectives Teresa Gessner and Thom Chinda spend much of their time developing the fictional persona of various adolescents and children, then going online as these characters and waiting for predators to pounce. Sadly, it doesn’t take long. As the “minor” and the bad guy build a relationship, what the detectives are actually doing is developing a case, tracking down the predator and working with the proper jurisdictions in order to facilitate arrest and conviction.

What can parents and the community do to keep their children safe on the Internet? Keep computers in a busy part of the house so that you can monitor activity. Monitor cell phone calls and texts. In other words, PAY ATTENTION! Kids are often smart, wily and naïve and adults need to work to stay one step ahead. If you believe your child is being victimized you can call the Denver Police Non-Emergency number 720-913-2000 and they will route you to the appropriate person. Mayfair citizens are encouraged to stay vigilant, and report any suspicious activities to the police. Crime (vehicle and other) prevention pointers:
