Water, Water Please!

By Lynn Gregory

This past month was the driest February in Denver history!

We are so fortunate to live in an older established neighborhood with an abundance of beautiful mature trees. They not only help shade us on a hot summer day, provide wonderful color, but also add value to our homes—a very important point in these tough economic times.

Your trees, shrubs, roses, and perennials need a lot more moisture than they have been receiving this past year. It is critical for the health of these plants to water when the temperature is above freezing. Plants that do not receive additional moisture are more susceptible to insect infestation and various types of tree diseases. Many local tree companies offer a winter watering service, but homeowners can certainly do it themselves. Simply attach an old-fashioned frog sprayer on your hose and move it around the yard every 20-30 minutes to cover all your plants. This will do enormous good for your garden.

If you don’t have any type of spray head handy, at least put the hose at the base of each tree and let it run slowly for at about 20 minutes. Our trees will thank you for taking a few hours of your time to do this beneficial watering!
