Message from the MNI President

By Scott Babcock

Summer 2009 Upcoming Events
June is packed full of exciting summer events in Mayfair! First, we can look forward to the 4th Annual Feast on The Fax on Tuesday, June 9 with lots of local restaurants participating. In addition, you’ll also want to mark your calendar for Saturday, August 22 for our annual Summer Concert in the Park. Plan a family picnic and relax on into the evening enjoying music provided by the Denver Municipal Band. We’ll even have a face painter for the kids, and we plan to have snacks for purchase so come prepared with a bit of cash you might not otherwise bring.

Playground Improvements for Palmer!
Do you ever wonder if your voice is heard on issues affecting Mayfair? Well, look no further than your local elementary school to be assured that the answer is “Yes.” Several residents expressed the need for improvements to the playground and gravel field at Palmer Elementary. Based on their input, we approached the district and the school and on May 22, Palmer Elementary celebrated the grand opening of its long-awaited new learning landscape playground with a focus on using the area for teaching and learning.

While we have yet to see the final site plans, preliminary plans call for replacement of all blacktop, much of the gravel with an irrigated grass field, and some of the outdated playground equipment with new. Additional plans call for the entire structure to follow the geography of Colorado. Building from that would be a geology walk, raised garden beds and historical facts about Colorado written around the playground. A grassed field with a track also will have a raised shade structure for performances, etc., as well as a covered shade structure with benches as you come out the back doors of the school. Plans also call for a tricycle path in the section of the playground created for early childhood education learning. The school is also waiting for approval for a ropes and boulders course, subject to approval by the safety committee.

We’re excited to see the changes unfold, and look forward with parents and neighbors to a new and improved Palmer Elementary.

As all of you who love to garden are aware, it has been on tough last six months on our gardens. With a record breaking dry winter and very weird spring, most gardens are way behind in growth. Because we have established a tradition of excellence in our Mayfair Cottage Garden Tour, we have decided that to have the best possible gardens to share we will postpone and re-schedule for a even better garden tour in 2010. ’s all keep up the spirit of the garden tour and share plants, advice and compliments to all the wonderful gardeners who make Mayfair so beautiful!!

MNI Hosts General Meeting

By Wayne Sirmons

On April 21, 2009 the Mayfair Neighbors, Inc. board held their semi-annual general meeting at Palmer Elementary School auditorium. Each spring and fall Mayfair Neighbors Inc. hosts a larger scale meeting to give the neighborhood an opportunity to meet, listen to the board’s plans for the next year, and hear guest speakers cover various topics of interest to the neighborhood. There is also an opportunity for attendee questions and answers.

At the latest general meeting, highlights included a discussion on the pending Feast on The FAX. Tickets were available for sale at the auditorium entrance. The board advised the audience that if tickets are purchased through Mayfair Neighbors Inc., the board will receive $5.00 of the ticket price. Not only is it a fun night, it provides a great way to help support the neighborhood association.

Lynn Gregory spoke about the Mayfair Garden Tour. NOTE: Since the meeting, the event has been postponed until 2010 due to a slow start to spring this year. If you are interested in volunteering or sponsoring the 2010 Garden Tour, please email info@mayfairdenver.org.

During the question and answer section, questions addressed property values, petty crime, cleaning up sections of the neighborhood as well as questions about the hotel development in the old Annie’s location and the progress with the University Hospital redevelopment. These topics will be addressed in upcoming issues of The Mirror and in email newsblast.

If you missed the general meeting, but want to get involved the board holds its monthly meeting on the first Monday of each month from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at 6740 E. Colfax Avenue (in the Montclair Community Center located at the southwest corner of Colfax and Newport).

Flora May Fair

Mayfair Neighbors Supports Dogs – Even Plastic Ones!

By Diane Freeman

Mod Livin’, one of Mayfair’s local businesses and loyal supporters, again sponsored the “Best in Show” charity event. For the third year, Mod Livin’ made available for purchase two sizes of abstract plastic dogs by Finnish designer Eero Aarnio (you would recognize his modern ball chair or hanging bubble chair) which buyers then decorated and returned to the store. The puppies were on display for most of the month of April while online voting took place. The event culminated at the event on April 24 in an entertaining evening of music and refreshments, attended by approximately 300 people and highlighted by a live auction of the delightful dogs where the competitive spirit ran high. Proceeds from the auction benefitted the Downtown Animal Care Foundation and local businesses.

Mayfair Neighbors, Inc. purchased and decorated the larger size pooch who was entered as “Flora May Fair.” Her colorful floral attire was compliments of the creative efforts of several Mayfair residents. Mod Livin’ owner Jill Warner was excited to welcome Mayfair Neighbors as participants in the event and seemed to have a special fondness for Flora. Flora made a good showing at the benefit auction, garnering $130 for worthy causes. Humans providing the canine entrants had an opportunity to earn rewards also. Designers of both the dog winning the most online votes and the dog garnering the highest auction bid were awarded generous gift certificates to Mod Livin’. You can view the contestants here).

Mod Livin’, specializing in mid-century modern furniture, is located at 5327 East Colfax Avenue (between Grape and Glencoe). Hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Wicked

Mayfair Goes to the Theater

By Wayne Sirmons

Mayfair Neighbors, Inc. (MNI) is selling tickets to the November 3rd performance of the popular Broadway tour of the acclaimed musical Wicked at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. MNI’s participation is part of an ongoing effort to bring exciting neighborhood events to Mayfair residents. We have secured a block of 50 GREAT seats to Wicked. The tickets are $95.00 (which is about what you’d pay for tickets from Ticketmaster after all the handling fees). The seats are in Section “B”: Rows “J-P”, which start at 12 rows back and slightly right of the stage. An added bonus is that $15.00 from each sale goes to Mayfair Neighbors. Proceeds help MNI provide more activities for the neighborhood such as the annual Easter egg hunt, Concert in the Park, and raising funds for Palmer Elementary School. As a nonprofit organization that does not charge for events, we are dependent on fundraisers such as the ticket sales to ensure we can continue to provide activities for Mayfair. If there is enough interest, we will organize a pre-show dinner for any Mayfair residents at a local restaurant. If you only see one show this year, this is the show to see because if you think you know the Wicked Witch from the Wizard of Oz, think again. We have all heard the story about how Dorothy famously triumphed over the Wicked Witch, but we’ve only heard one side of the story. Through amazing sets, fantastic music, colorful costumes, and outstanding special effects, Wicked tells the story of an unlikely friendship between two girls who first meet as witch students at school: the beautiful blonde Glinda and a very misunderstood green girl, Elphaba. Wicked has won dozens of awards including three Tony Awards and is always a sell-out show in Denver. Get your tickets today at www.mayfairdenver.org and click on the link for tickets and exact seat locations.
