By Mark Gardinier, Treasurer Mayfair Neighbors, Inc.
I am happy to report that Mayfair Neighbors has completed another successful year, and want to personally thank all who paid their membership and gave extra cash gifts this year. Our membership dollars are more than double last year’s level and cash gifts to Mayfair Neighbors, Inc. more than tripled, too!
Year-to-date financial snapshot:
Revenue $16,008
Expense $19,906
Difference $(3,898)
Revenue Summary
We missed our target on a few of our activities that led to lower than expected revenue:
•Our annual Garden Tour was postponed due to a late spring.
• We decided not to include a silent auction with the wine tasting.
• We sold fewer tickets to Feast-on-the-Fax.
Look for the return of our popular Mayfair Cottage Garden Tour in 2010 and a second wine-tasting event in the spring.
Expense Summary
Our expenses were a bit higher this year due to:
• A one-time application fee to the IRS for our 501(c)(3) application.
• MNI’s memorial gift to the Inter-Neighborhood Cooperation’s Dollar Dictionary drive in honor of long-time board member Nancy Jackson.
• Costs for website www.mayfairdenver.org enhancements.
Community Involvement
We extended our activities in 2009 by adding the brunch at Palmer Elementary prior to the annual Egg Hunt in an effort to market the neighborhood school to more families in the area. We also added some food sales to the Concert in the Park. This year we bought a block of tickets for the November 3 performance of Wicked at the Buell Theatre in the first installment of “Mayfair Neighbors Presents.”
Non-profit Status
This year we re-organized with the IRS as a 501(c)(3) entity, which has given us the opportunity to receive non-profit postage rates, and we are applying for sales tax exemptions which will help us stretch our dollars on the Mayfair Mirror. Additionally, your membership dollars and cash gifts may be tax deductible. Your tax professional can advise you on the deductibility of your donations.
As the year comes to a close, please consider making a year-end gift to Mayfair Neighbors, Inc. You can mail it to Mayfair Neighbors, Inc, P.O. Box 200306, Denver CO 80220.
Thank you, again, to Mayfair’s residents and businesses for your memberships and gifts to help us maintain a truly great neighborhood community!
Add a perfect September evening on Solera’s patio, great neighbors, scrumptious hors d’oeuvres, and delectable wines from Mayfair Liquor and you have the making of another signature Mayfair Neighbors, Inc. (MNI) annual wine tasting. The event is one of Mayfair’s most popular fundraising events with proceeds going to Palmer Elementary, and to support other MNI community efforts. Nearly 50 residents, business owners, and city council members gathered on Solera’s patio on September 15. The event netted more than $900 for MNI, $600 of which was donated to Palmer Elementary.
Mayfair Neighbors extends heartfelt thanks to our wine tasting sponsors Solera and Mayfair Liquors, and looks forward to another great event in 2010!
Mayfair Board member Elaine Zupancic engages Palmer students during the Dollar Dictionary Drive annual distribution on September 25.
Mayfair Neighbors again sponsored the citywide Dollar Dictionary Drive (DDD). This is an annual event organized by the Inter-Neighborhood Cooperation (INC). We made a special donation in memory of longtime board member and DDD champion Nancy Jackson. Board members Elaine Zupancic and David Bromberg delivered the dictionaries and thesauruses to the 3rd graders at Palmer Elementary on September 25.
Hi, my name is Annette Palmer. I have wanted to move into the Mayfair area of Denver for over four years and it finally came true. I don’t live in the greatest apartment, but I’m here now and that’s all that matters. I got my foot in the door and I will look for better living accommodations after a couple of months.
First, I want to say that I think this is the greatest neighborhood in Denver. With all the shopping close by, who needs a car? I feel as safe as I did when we first moved to Aurora, CO 15 years ago. But north Aurora changed, and not for the better.
I received a copy of the Mirror in my mail and it stated “A New Playground for Palmer.” How did you know? YES, we have a new playground to explore and discover.
I am very happy to finally be living in a community that actually doesn’t just talk the talk, but walks the walk. A community that takes pride in their homes and shops. Makes a safe haven for all who live here, whether other people appreciate it or not.
I like to help out any way that I can. As a matter of fact, today (Oct 24) there was an accident involving a van and a garage. The garage won. My only concern was that of the homeowner. I didn’t want the driver of that van to take off leaving the owner to pay for the driver’s mistake. Luckily, the van was too badly damaged to go anywhere, and the 911 operator had police and fire here quickly.
I guess you can say I am a “busy body.” I like to look out for everyone. If I see something that doesn’t look right, I will call 911, stick my neck out, as some people say. But it’s to let others know that “this is MY neighborhood and don’t you forget it.”
