Encouraging a New Spirit of Volunteerism

By Wayne Sirmons,
President Mayfair Neighbors, Inc.

Wayne Sirmons, President of MNI

It’s been a busy spring. Mayfair Neighbors Inc. hosted their annual egg hunt, put together a community shred-a-thon, and participated in Green Print Denver’s door-to-door campaign to reduce the neighborhood’s carbon footprint. We are gearing up for a Wine Tasting at Solera to benefit Palmer Elementary and organizing the Mayfair Garden Tour. In addition, the board has been listening to zoning requests, working with the city to make sure Mayfair Park stays in tip-top shape, attending meetings concerning the future of Colfax, Denver zoning changes and countless other issues that have an impact on our neighborhood. And there’s so much more we want to do but there simply isn’t enough time. That’s where you come in. We need you. Your community needs you. Your neighbors need you. Volunteers are the lifeblood of any neighborhood and Mayfair is no different: the more volunteers we have, the more vibrant and dynamic Mayfair will become.

From Inspiration to Action
Dr. Martin Luther King said it best, “Everyone can be great because everyone can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t even have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve... You only need a heart full of grace…” In this spirit, Mayfair Neighbors Inc. is starting a volunteer database of neighbors who want to help make Mayfair a better place to live. There are opportunities that will suit any skill level, age, or interest. Maybe you have neighborhood project you’d like to implement. Let us know. I hear from neighbors all the things Mayfair should do, but we need people like you to turn all these great ideas into reality.

Your commitment can range from a few hours a year to a few hours a day – it’s up to you. I know its cliché, but you really will get more out than you put in. You’ll make great friends, start to really connect to your neighborhood, feel great for giving back, but ultimately, you’ll have a great time.

Maybe you have signed up to be a volunteer in the past and never heard anything. If that’s the case, please sign up again. Due to technical glitches, much of our volunteer data is long gone so we need to hear from you again. Maybe you have always wanted to help out, but were feeling a little shy. Don’t worry about it. We are embarrassingly relaxed and welcome everyone. The important thing is for you to be passionate and willing to serve.

Volunteer Today!
If you’d like to volunteer, please email wsirmons@gmail.com. Include your name, phone, and how much time you can spare and if you have a special skill, talent, or interest be sure to let us know! We look forward to working with you and for you. Together we can make Mayfair shine.

If Not, Then
We know not everyone can volunteer. But if you can’t, please join Mayfair Neighbors Inc. It’s a small membership fee, which is tax deductible, and it pays for this newsletter, our website, the concert in the park, the egg hunt and various other neighborhood events. Mail your check ($10 Senior; $15 Household; $25 Business) to Mayfair Neighbors, Inc., PO Box 200306, Denver, 80220, or by credit card by completing the form provided on our Membership page.

We extend a special thanks to Diane Freeman for her service, creativity and energy as a member of the Mayfair Board. Thanks again for your contributions and we’ll see you in the ‘hood!
