Project Overview

The East Colfax BRT Project extends approximately five miles from downtown Denver to Aurora. Once complete, buses will operate in dedicated center-running lanes, providing faster and more reliable transit service while improving pedestrian safety and accessibility.

Major improvements include:

Construction began in late 2024 and is expected to conclude in 2027. Throughout construction, different portions of Colfax will experience varying levels of traffic impacts depending on the phase of work.

Upcoming Milestones

Over the coming months, construction is expected to continue progressing east through the Mayfair neighborhood as crews complete roadway reconstruction, utilities, sidewalks, landscaping, and future BRT station improvements. As each block is completed, residents will begin seeing permanent features such as wider sidewalks, improved crosswalks, ADA curb ramps, decorative streetscape elements, and enhanced transit stations.

East Colfax BRT Update: Kearney Intersection Construction Begins in August

Construction on the East Colfax Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project continues to advance through the Mayfair neighborhood, with several new milestones beginning in early August.

Kearney Intersection Enters Phase 2

Beginning July 31, crews will transition to Phase 2 construction between Kearney Street and Leyden Street, including major work at the Kearney intersection.

Starting in the first week of August, the north side of the Kearney and East Colfax intersection will be closed for several months while crews complete roadway, utility, and streetscape improvements.

What Residents Should Expect

The Kearney and Colfax intersection will not allow turns onto or off East Colfax Avenue during construction.
Kearney Street will remain accessible to residents, businesses, parking lots, and on-street parking via 16th Avenue.
Lane alignments on East Colfax will shift as construction progresses through this phase.
Drivers should plan for temporary traffic pattern changes and allow extra travel time when traveling through the area.

Sidewalk Improvements Underway

Crews have also begun installing the project's first soil cells in the Mayfair neighborhood between Eudora Street and Elm Street on the south side of East Colfax.

Soil cells are an underground support system that allows street trees to grow while protecting sidewalks and underground utilities. This work marks the beginning of the permanent sidewalk and streetscape improvements planned for the corridor.

Mayfair Streetscape Features Begin Installation

Residents will soon notice the first decorative Mayfair-themed sidewalk stamps being installed at the corners of Fairfax Street. These decorative elements are part of the neighborhood-specific enhancements included in the East Colfax BRT project and represent one of the first visible permanent improvements in Mayfair.

Past Updates (January to July 2026)

During the first half of 2026, construction activity remained primarily west of the Mayfair neighborhood while crews completed utility work, roadway reconstruction, and new BRT stations. Throughout this period, Denver and RTD continued preparing for construction in Mayfair by advancing project planning, operational testing, and future traffic changes.

Notable milestones included:

July: Construction officially entered the Mayfair neighborhood, with work beginning between Eudora Street and Holly Street and progressing eastward. Early activities include utility work, median removal, lane shifts, and construction of the future Elm Street BRT Station. Residents can expect temporary traffic changes, periodic intersection closures, and parking impacts, while access to homes, businesses, and sidewalks will generally remain available.
June: The city released additional details about the final roadway configuration and announced construction would soon advance into the Mayfair neighborhood.
May: Construction officially expanded across the full East Colfax BRT corridor.
April: Denver approved additional project management funding to support construction through completion.
March: RTD began operational testing for future BRT service.
January–February: Construction continued west of Colorado Boulevard, with minimal direct impacts to Mayfair residents.
