Our Experience @ Denver Community Film Festival

Last week, Mayfair Neighbors was proud to join other Registered Neighborhood Organizations across the city in co-hosting the 2nd Annual Denver Community Film Festival at the historic Elitch Theatre, alongside Denver Inter-Neighborhood Cooperation and Bucket List Community Cafe.

The evening featured a screening of Truth Be Told , a film that takes viewers inside newsrooms across Colorado, revealing how local journalists report, verify, and connect with the communities they serve. The short film, This is South Broadway by Councilwoman Flor Alvidrez, was also screened and explored South Broadway as a place for “dreamers, doers, and the determined,” highlighting the history and people who continue to shape and uphold the corridor’s iconic legacy. Together, the films sparked an important conversation about the stories that shape our neighborhoods — and what happens when those stories go untold. One theme came through clearly throughout the evening: public media is deeply connected to democracy. Strong local journalism helps communities stay informed, engaged, and connected to one another. But across Colorado and the country, local newsrooms are shrinking. We learned that Colorado news organizations average just 1.35 full-time employees — a striking reminder of how thinly stretched many local journalists are. When local news disappears, communities lose more than headlines. We lose institutional memory, accountability, shared understanding, and the smaller human stories that help neighbors see one another. There is a real tragedy in the stories that never get covered simply because there are not enough reporters, photographers, editors, or funding to tell them.

Events like this also reflect the mission of Mayfair Neighbors: bringing people together, connecting neighbors with resources, and strengthening the sense of community that makes neighborhoods thrive. As a nonprofit Registered Neighborhood Organization, we believe strong communities are built through participation, shared experiences, and access to local information and support. If you value community journalism and neighborhood connection, consider supporting local news organizations and groups like Mayfair Neighbors. Health

y neighborhoods depend on informed and engaged neighbors.
